Professional & Community Education Goldsmith College Ð New Media
Trainer I
designed and delivered training courses on a range of new media technologies,
including digital photography, basic IT, web design and image manipulation.
I led groups of up to 20 adults and children through these short courses,
which were aimed at providing the students with skills as a foundation
for further training. Part of my role was to assess and grade the
students for streaming for the next level of study. The software used
during the courses was Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia
Dreamweaver. All photography was done using Fuji Finepix cameras.

Tower
Hamlets College - Media & Internet Services Technician The
purpose of this temporary position was to manage and maintain the
technical resources of several departments across a number of sites;
to instruct and assist college staff and students in the use of the
resources; and to design and layout marketing and support literature.
I was responsible for ordering, tracking, servicing and setting up
multi-media resources, including digital cameras, video camcorders,
televisions, VCRs, data projectors, laptop PCs and laminators. Aside
from the technical knowledge, the main skill demanded by this position
was the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people,
often having to explain technical subjects to people with limited
technical knowledge.

College of Business and Computing - Web Design Tutor Teaching
Adobe Photoshop ImageReady and Macromedia Dreamweaver to classes of
up to 25 adults of mixed abilities. The 11 week course took the attendees
through the basics and intermediate functions of the software packages.
By the completion of the course the attendees were able to create
their own web site using the skills learnt during the course. The
ability to communicate effectively with a large class of people with
mixed experience and skills was key to this role.

Freelance
Designer - t/a Rough and Ready Graphic Design Since
1999 I have been working on a freelance basis as a designer producing
work for a number of companies, community centres, charities, theatres
and individuals. This has included the design of web sites, posters,
leaflets, corporate and business identities and logos, a mobile art
installation and multi-media products. Many of these jobs required
scheduling to tight deadlines, often working closely with the client.
Some jobs gave a wide amount of freedom of interpretation, while other
clients had strong ideas as to their requirements.

News
International - Imaging Operator This
role involved electronic scanning of negatives, prints and other artwork
for The Times and Times Supplements. I then retouched the images using
Adobe Photoshop to correct any defects. Other work included operating
the photo-processing and printing machines and filing images using
a sophisticated electronic filing system. This was a very pressurised
position which demanded the ability to work to very strict deadlines
and produce work to high standards of accuracy.

Hackney
Community College - Photography Teacher This
part-time position was based at one of Hackney College's off-site
locations in a community centre. Initially I planned and designed
this black and white photography course covering basic and intermediary
levels, scheduling lessons and produced handouts and notes. The two
hour evening lessons were attended by anything from three to seventeen
adults, who varied enormously in experience and abilities. This demanded
the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of people,
including the college and community centre administrators. Planning
and organisation was required as well as practical skills such as
maintaining the equipment and setting up props and co-ordinating the
end of year show.

1991
to 1992 |
East
London News - Photojournalist As
a photojournalist for this free local paper I covered a wide range
of events and stories from light hearted pieces to political and social
topics. These included the arrival of the first Kurdish refugees to
the area, poor housing conditions and the opening of new shops. Most
of my work was on the photographic side, but this also meant providing
information for journalist at the paper, though I did also occasionally
contribute written pieces.

Camp
Libbey, Ohio - Head of Department for Photography and Drama This
summer camp catered for boy and girl scouts aged between seven and
seventeen, including some severely disabled children. As head of department
I was responsible for scheduling a total of twelve staff and volunteers
between the two departments, while also leading classes myself. I
was on-call 24 hours a day in this physically and mentally demanding
role, with responsibility for the well being and safety of the children.
During my time at the camp I produced and directed two major plays,
as well teaching other subjects such as creative writing, archery,
rocket making, silk screen printing and video production.

Freelance
Photographer My
work as a freelance photographer over the last few years has been
pursued on a part-time basis to further my interest in image making.
During this time I have covered a broad range of subjects, ranging
from cv and portfolio portraits, theatre publicity shots, records
for legal evidence, still life, weddings to a lunar eclipse. I have
won two national awards for my photography, both for social documentary
subjects. What this has taught me is the need to seize the moment,
and to persist despite obstacles to get the shot. |
